Do I tip the hibachi chef at Jinbeh?

Tipping the hibachi chef is appreciated but not required at Jinbeh, you are not obligated. Standard practice in DFW hibachi: tip your server 18-20% on the meal as usual, and separately offer the hibachi chef a tip (often $5 to $20 depending on group size and how much you enjoyed the performance) if they exceeded expectations. Some guests roll the chef tip into the server tip; others hand cash directly to the chef at the end of the show. There is no wrong way. The chef and the server are typically separate tip pools, so a separate tip for the chef goes to them directly. If the entire experience was outstanding, generous tipping on both is always appreciated.

Tipping etiquette varies regionally and is often a source of confusion at hibachi restaurants. The reason the chef tip is conventional is that hibachi chefs perform a separate service from the server, the show, the cooking, the entertainment, that goes beyond what your standard server does. Many chefs build personal relationships with regular guests over years; tipping is one way to recognize that. For first-time hibachi guests at Jinbeh, $5-10 per couple to the chef is generous and well-received; for large parties, $20-30 to the chef is appropriate. None of this is required, and your meal will not change based on your tip. If you are unsure, ask your server for guidance.
